Hello there. Hope you’re feeling well
Books in supermarkets. We readers know full well that we’re unlikely to find the Rise and Fall of The Roman Empire in such stores. They aim to go for what will sell and nothing else. Standard Bestsellerdom is what they do.
And you know what? Fine. What do we expect?
So why has British Supermarket Morrisons annoyed me? Well I had to go into their Newport Road store in Cardiff the other day.
And this is what I saw….
Books have never, ever been just “Home Entertainment”. Of course they’re read in Planes, Trains and automobiles (unless you’re actually driving of course).
The point being of course is that you could, if you wanted to, describe a book as the original portable entertainment unit given that you could take it anywhere.
So for Morrisons to describe their book display as “Home Entertainment” betrays an ignorance of the power of books which is just shocking….even for a supermarket.
Normal service will be resumed now I’ve got that off my chest.
Until the next time.
You’re right on this. “Home entertainment” certainly is an interesting title for a category. I appreciate you sharing this. Now I know what some of the stores look like across the pond. Hope you’re well this week? Cheers, -Thalia
